A Ukrainian cargo plane has crashed in Greece. The plane crashed near the northern city of Kavala late on Saturday (July 16).
A cargo plane crashed near the northern Greek city of Kavala late on Saturday, Reuters reported, citing the Greek fire service and state TV. There were eight passengers on the plane.
Antonov An-12 model cargo plane is owned by a Ukrainian company. It was traveling from Serbia to Jordan on Saturday. Due to engine trouble mid-air, the pilot requested an emergency landing but later lost contact with the aircraft.
Video footage shows the plane burst into flames as it descends rapidly. The plane exploded after impacting the ground. Initial reports said there were eight people on board.
In a statement, Greece's fire service said 15 firefighters and seven engines were deployed to control the fire after the accident. More rescue workers are on their way to the scene.
A fire service official said, "We are considering the goods on board as hazardous materials."
