Russia started attacking Ukraine on February 24 this year. According to the United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), at least 972 children have been directly or indirectly affected by the war since the Russian invasion. Qatar-based news media Al-Jazeera has given such information in a report.
UNICEF executive director Catherine Russell said in a statement that the United Nations has only verified these figures. The actual number could be much higher than this, he said.
Many children across Ukraine have experienced violence as a result of this war. Catherine also lamented the devastation caused to the country's education system by the war.
In a report given on Monday, he said, the school is going to start in just one week. But it is impossible to estimate how much the children of Ukraine have lost in this war. He believes that the country's education system has been destroyed due to increasing hostilities across the country. Schools have been used as targets or otherwise by various factions in this war. As a result, families do not feel safe sending their children to school.
He also said that from the statistics it is assumed that 1 in every 10 schools or 10 percent of the schools were damaged.
Meanwhile, calling for a ceasefire, Catherine said children need security, stability and support. All children, including those in emergency situations, need to be sent to school and educated. What Ukraine's children need most is peace.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced military operations in Ukraine. After that, the conflict between these two countries has been going on for 182 consecutive days till today. There are reports of many casualties on both sides. However, there is no sign of an end to the fighting so far.
