Ilsha Village of Baharchhara Union of Banskhali Upazila of Chittagong. It is common in ten other villages of Bangladesh. But it has become unique for a particular reason. The village retains a memory of a distant past, one of glory and tradition. 454 years ago, a beautiful mosque was built in this village with bricks, stones and surki. Its name is Bakhshi Hamid Jame Masjid. This beautiful structure of Mughal architecture symbolizes our history and culture. Devout Muslims have been offering five daily prayers here for hundreds of years. The architecture has, however, changed somewhat since its construction.
Ilsha is a secluded village on the coast of Bay of Bengal, 45 km away from Chittagong city. Khankhanabad and Baharchhara points on the seashore are about two kilometers away from this village. On August 26, the sun of a hot Bhadra day was setting in the west as I approached the mosque by crossing a narrow-broken road from Gunagri Khasmahal on Banshkhali's main road westward across the Jalkadar Canal, past Bashir Ullah Miar Bazar and Musharraf Ali Miar Bazar. On reaching the square of the mosque, the first sight was the huge lake of Shanbandhano Ghat.
