According to a World Health Organization survey, 4.6 percent of men and women in Bangladesh suffer from depression. It can occur at any age, even in children. However, in most cases, the first symptoms of depression appear between the ages of 30 and 40. In addition, the risk is slightly higher among people aged 15 to 18 and over 60 years. People who suffer from chronic diseases including diabetes, arthritis, shortness of breath, cancer, stroke, heart disease, epilepsy, have a much higher risk of developing depression. It can also be caused by unemployment, poverty, loneliness, family and relationship problems, pregnancy and postpartum period, divorce, emigration, immigration, drug use, etc.

Common symptoms of depression are: feeling bad for most of the day for at least two weeks, not feeling well, irritable, suddenly angry, not doing well in the past, distraction, Feeling tired, sleep problems (eg waking up early or not sleeping or getting too much sleep), taste problems (eg not wanting to eat, not being hungry or overeating), loss of sexual desire, loss of attention , Forgetting common things, thinking of death all the time, feeling guilty, thinking and trying to commit suicide, etc. In addition, the cause is not found কিছু some physical problems are seen in most cases; Especially in female patients, such as headaches, discomfort in the head, head-body-hand-foot irritation, something stuck near the throat, body aches, neck pain, joint pain, chest irritation, chest pain, difficulty breathing, etc. No examination has found the cause of these physical problems. Feeling we have 'Run out of gas' emotionally, we may feel less motivated, less likely to attend social events, and in some cases more abnormal. However, it should be kept in mind that not all of these symptoms will be present in one person all the time and even if there are a few symptoms, it cannot be assumed that depression has occurred in someone. It must be diagnosed with the help of a specialist or a physician trained in mental health.

There are scientific treatments for depression. The important thing is that it is not possible to get rid of depression overnight. You have to be patient for this. Psychiatrists need time. In most cases, antidepressants and psychotherapy are needed to treat depression. Medication alone does not completely cure it. For this reason, if the doctor gives the patient psychotherapy for a while, then the healing is faster. If the physician has a time crisis, he or she may be referred to a psychologist for psychotherapy.
