Professor Mohammad Abed Ali, Chairman of the Election Monitoring Forum and Secretary General of the SAARC Human Rights Foundation, paid a courtesy call on Fouad Tawfiq, Chairman of the Election Commission of Maldives on 14 May.
During the meeting, various issues including election system of the two countries, monitoring of the 12th National Assembly elections and participation of political parties were discussed.
The Chairman of the Election Commission of the country said, "We are satisfied that the Eleventh Parliamentary Election of Bangladesh is participatory." Election Commissioners and human rights leaders of SAARC countries are keen to visit Bangladesh to monitor the pre-election situation in Dhaka under the management of Election Monitoring Forum.
The Maldives Election Commission will send a representative as an observer if invited to the next twelfth election.
Fouad Toufi further said that there is no alternative to the electoral process to continue the democratic trend of a country. The Election Commission will play a key role in organizing the elections.
The government will cooperate in carrying out the responsibilities of the Election Commission, not interfering. Political parties should co-operate with the Election Commission in discharging its responsibilities.
Also present were Ismail Habib, Special Representative of the SAARC Human Rights Foundation Maldives and Vice Chairman of the Maldives Election Commission, and Amjad Mostafa, former President of the Maldives Employment Tribunal.
