The earthquake struck at 4:17 am on Monday.  The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake had a magnitude of 7.8.  Earthquakes can be even stronger.  However, how much damage it will cause depends more on where the earthquake is taking place, how deep the origin is from the surface, how the population is in the affected area, how strong the infrastructure is, including houses.
