Boat capsizes off Tunisia coast: 8 dead, 15 missing

Another incident of boat sinking occurred on the coast of Tunisia.  At least 8 people were killed when a boat carrying migrants sank illegally while crossing the Mediterranean Sea.

This incident happened when the boat sank off the coast of North African country Tunisia while going to Italy.  Turkish media TAT World reported this information in a report on Thursday (September 8).

According to the news, the incident of boat sinking occurred while crossing the Mediterranean Sea on Thursday.  The coast guard rescued 17 migrants from a capsized boat in Chebba town of Mahdia region.  The boat had more passengers than capacity.

The boat sailed off the coast of El Awabed in the Sfax region this week, a Tunisian security official said.  Most of the migrants on the boat are Tunisians.

Rescue operations are underway for those who are missing.  Rescuers hope the missing are alive.

Dozens of people have drowned off the coast of Li, Tunisia in recent months.  They were trying to cross to Italy from Tunisia and Libya.  This effort is increasing day by day.  Most of the people pass through this coast during normal summer.

According to the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, more than 10,000 migrants have attempted to cross from the North African country since the beginning of this year.  The organization also said that 2 thousand children tried to go to Italy through this route.

Around 43,000 migrant-refugees used the central Mediterranean route between January and July, according to the EU's Frontex border agency.  That is 44 percent more than the first seven months of 2021.
